Lessons

“Singing is to talking as running is to walking.” This quote, from Kerrie B. Obert and Steven R. Chicurel’s book Geography of the Voice, best describes my approach to singing technique. The basic function of running and walking is the same—putting one foot in front of the other to go from place to place. But running requires considerably more energy, stamina, and intensity. The same is true for singing. The voice should function the way it does when you talk, assuming there are no bad speaking habits. But singing is much more heightened and exaggerated in terms of vocal range, diction, breathing and breath control, opening of the mouth, etc. It takes your whole body to sing, not just your voice, and it can be physically exhausting and uncomfortable.

Just as marathon runners experience the “runner’s high,” well-trained singers can get to the point where the physical demands of singing become automatic. That is when singing becomes effortless.

I offer 30 and 60 minute lessons out of my home studio in East Islip on Long Island’s South Shore. 30 minute lessons are recommended for students under 15 and a full hour for older students.

Pricing
Half-hour $30.00
Full-hour $60.00

For an additional fee, I can come to your home to teach a full hour lesson. My fee is determined by among other things, travel time and distance. Generally though, it would be double the price of a regular full hour lesson.
